Venue: Princes golf course in Sandwich Kent. An amazing links course which should provide our toughest challenge yet. “The hardest course I’ve ever played on” Dominic Tootill 2014 (former scratch golfer and Faldonian).

With the squads finalised, the captains are no doubt tinkering with numerous pairings and options for Day One of Seve Cup 8. In order to enhance the golf chat at Stu Wilson’s wedding and to allow a 6 week lead into the weekend, the captains need to submit their pairings and order by 12pm on Wednesday 27th August 2014.

The Seve Cup VII Pairings and Format

Round 1 Valley Course (9 holes) – Foursomes Matchplay – Tee off 10:30am

1.       Theodorou & Evans     vs         Marshall & Joyce
2.       Hewett & Lunn             vs         Preston & Gill
3.       Ralley & Waite             vs         Cardoso & A. Williams
4.       Etheridge & Scott         vs         B. Williams & Sanchez
5.       Stevenson & Barr         vs         Craigie & Dharmasingham
6.       Russell & Harlow          vs         Grose & Bullock
7.       Scargill & S. Williams    vs         Wilson & Coleman

Foursomes essentially means playing alternate shots between your pair with one ball. One partner will always tee off from the odd holes with the other teeing off on the even. I will send some more details on handicaps and more detailed rules nearer the event.

Round 2 Meon Course (18 holes) – Matchplay Pairs – Tee off 1:15pm

1.       Theodorou & Evans     vs         Marshall & Joyce
2.       Hewett & Lunn             vs         Preston & Gill

4.       Etheridge & Scott         vs         B. Williams & Sanchez
5.       Stevenson & Barr         vs         Craigie & Dharmasingham
6.       Russell & Harlow          vs         Grose & Bullock
7.       Scargill & S. Williams    vs         Wilson & Coleman

This is the normal format that we play on Day One so doesn’t really need much explaining. Stu and I were going to mix these pairings up to make it slightly more interesting, but I don’t think we’ll have enough time to everyone finish the foursomes, grab some food and then tee off. Keeping the pairings the same means if you draw or lose your foursomes match you’ll then have the opportunity to redeem yourselves in the afternoon. Again I will send an e-mail nearer the time detailing handicaps and any rules people need to know.

Saturday night

–          We finish the rounds approx 6:30pm;
–          Check into the hotel;
–          Shower and change and meet everyone for dinner at approx. 8pm;
–          After dinner we complete the auction;
–          Announce single line-up for Day Two; then
–          Drink and be merry.

Sunday

–          Breakfast;
–          Check out of hotel;
–          Tee off for Round 3 Singles Matchplay at 10:44am;
–          Complete singles matches approx 4:30pm; and

Tournament review: The Pooch & Mutt North London Open

WILSON SILENCES CRITICS WITH RUTHLESS DISPLAY IN FINAL MAJOR OF THE YEAR

They say a week is a long time in politics, well a month is an enternity in golf. Or at least it may have felt that way for the Team Lyle captain Stuart Wilson. That was until the approximately 5pm on Saturday at the Inaugural Pooch & Mutt North London Open 2012. One month previous there was mumurings of a lack of leadership, direction and indeed question marks around Wilson being the right man to take Lyle forward in 2013 after another singles day hammering in SC5.

One month later he becomes a major winner with a ruthless display of excellent golf in wet and windy conditions at the Hainault Golf Course. He didn’t do it the easy way either. Knowing he needed to par the last to take it to a play off with the Spartak Masters winner Cardoso, which would eventually be a 3 way play off after Dominic Tootill, (playing in a later group than both) an ex scratch handicapper also carded a nett Par round of tidy golf.

Talent has always been in abundance with Wilson, but to actually see off stiff competition also from Preston and Theodorou (both 1 over par) and Grose (2 over) showed genuine backbone. The three hole putting play off went to sudden death with Cardoso, after Toothill 3 putted the 2nd. Wilson yet again demonstrated nerves of steel similar to Kaymer in the Ryder Cup last month to slot home a down hill 4 footer to take the final major of the year – firmly putting to bed the debate around his ruthless streak and performing on the big stage. Despite the public display of support from Lyle after the SC, surely they now feel privately too, he’s the only man to take the faltering team forward.

Who knows, with 4 of the top 6 being Lyle players, maybe the tournament, along with the Grose & Cardoso partnership smashing Preston & Tootill in the same week could signal a shift in the balance of power between the two teams. In April, maybe the Lyle performance in Wales could be traced back to this week as the turning point.

Only time will tell.

Thanks a lot to everyone. Especially the CEO of the title sponsor. Faldonia too, for contribution to the 11th place prize.

The format
The format will be the same as last year where Day One will comprise matchplay pairs and Day Two will be matchplay singles. However this year we are changing the handicap rules, to avoid situations where a player needs a hole in one just to get a half!! See attached word doc for details. I hope its straight forward stuff, but if you don’t understand then we can explain it to you on the day or you can email Wilson or me beforehand. Your opponents will be marking your scorecards.

The person that owns the player who scores the highest stableford score on Singles Day (Sunday) will scoop the entire pot of money collected. Last year’s pot was over £700!! Well worth getting involved and identifying any potential bandits from Day One. Mario will be in touch in due course to get a few words from you for your write up in the auction brochure.

The new stableford cup!

ImageBehold the new Stableford Cup.

A luxurious plasticy/bronze sculpture stands over a foot tall and will hold its own in any trophy cabinet.

With The Seve Cup fast approaching this piece of silverware is surly going be worth the fight on day 2.

BTW – The milk is purely for scale and sadly does not accompany this magnificent trophy.
